Agitated Qantas passenger tries to open plane door
Qantas employees on a London to Sydney flight had to restrain a frantic passenger after he attempted to open an emergency exit door in mid-flight.
The QF2 flight transiting via Bangkok was descending into Sydney airport this morning when the male passenger grabbed a handle.
Another passenger who witnessed the incident claimed the man appeared agitated and had wanted to stand up and move around inside the plane for ten minutes while the plane descended.
“The man, who was a big guy, stood up again and made a move for the middle door in the economy section,” the passenger said.
“He grabbed the handle but Qantas staff were able to restrain him.”
“The incident wasn’t in any way threatening, but some children did become scared and upset, and started yelling,” the passenger added.
Qantas confirmed the actions of the unruly passenger but claimed the man had not handled the cabin door.
“A disruptive passenger on Qantas flight two was restrained by cabin crew on descent into Sydney this morning,” a Qantas officials said via a statement.
“While the passenger was in the vicinity of an aircraft door at one stage during descent, he did not handle the door.”
Qantas employees are said to have transferred the passenger to the front of the plane before it landed normally.
Other passengers were asked to stay in their seats for an extra 20 minutes before being permitted to disembark at Sydney International.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) took the passenger for questioning at the arrival gate.
The AFP said he had since been released from the authoriites and would not be charged.
“The individual is no longer in AFP custody,” an AFP spokesperson said.
“He is instead under the care of appropriate medical authorities.”
